How has TopUps changed your community?
The ability for a person to do TopUps is really an understated feature. You’re talking about the convenience of a person to do it anytime they want. In our market, a lot of people don’t have access to international cards like Visa and Mastercard, but what they do have access to is their savings or checking accounts. And the ease at which they can simply just make a transfer and have credit applied to their phones, it is a game-changer for our region. A person can be traveling internationally and still be able to top up their phone so they can stay in touch with their loved ones.
What is the customer feedback on using TopUps?
The customers are really delighted because they know not only do they have the access to top up their own phones, they can top up other phones as well. A lot of people top up for their families and friends, and it makes it easier and convenient because they don’t have to go to the supermarket, or store, or find that top up agent. It is this convenience that most people have said it was the biggest plus.
The ability to top up regionally is another one. Many people have friends and family in neighboring islands, so when they are traveling and are not familiar with that area, they have this ability to top up their own phone while roaming.
These are the two things that we received a lot of positive feedback from our customers. In fact, our customers are quite impressed about our ability to offer this service.
What is your favorite thing about TopUps?
My favorite thing of course is the fact that you get a little extra when you top up. Not only that, but I have a few prepaid phone numbers myself that I use for traveling and testing, and the ease at which I can top up on my own instead of having to go to a third party, that’s my favorite thing about this. I like being independent when it comes to banking services. So, just pulling out my phone and being able to do it myself, is definitely one of the best features for me personally.
Are there any additional comments you'd like to make?
One of the things that this pandemic has taught us is that although we are being locked away and in quarantine, we really need to stay in touch. So, having that option where you can top up your mobile phone on your own from your own account instead of going to an agent or a supermarket, it makes a big difference. Giving the customers the option to do this was one of things that we really wanted to pinpoint on the Mobilearth platform. A lot of Caribbean individuals used to come into the bank as a social function, but with the pandemic, you want to give customers the option to do these types of transactions without having to come to the bank, without going to the supermarket, without having to find a top up agent—because you just never know at what point you will be needing those services and the accessibility to do so. The ease of being able to do a mobile TopUp is definitely a game-changer in my opinion.

Why did 1st National Bank of Saint Lucia decide to use TopUps?
We decided to use the TopUp feature because persons in the Caribbean like the freedom and flexibility of having a prepaid phone. That way they are not locked down to a plan with one provider and feel obligated to pay a monthly bill. We wanted this feature to be available to our customers so they can top up and add funds instantly to any prepaid phone number at any time without issues.
We noticed your TopUp traffic is more than tripling week over week. Does that surprise you?
It doesn’t surprise me. To be honest, it shows that there is demand for the feature and I expect that exponential growth in usage to continue as awareness rises.
In what ways has TopUps exceeded your expectations?
It exceeded my expectation in being as simple as it is. I’ve used other top-up applications, and the process is timely as they required so much information. I also did not feel secure providing my credit card information on some of these sites. I feel better and much more secure doing the top-ups through Mobilearth. It is so quick and easy that even someone like my grandmother can do it if necessary.
